Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the return of Didier Drogba. The striker has signed a one-year contract.

Veteran striker Didier Drogba has reached an agreement with Chelsea on a one-year deal. The move comes after the longtime Chelsea star decided to end his stay with Galatasaray and return to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea reported the news on the club's website, with Drogba saying:
It was an easy decision - I couldn't turn down the opportunity to work with Jose again.  Everyone knows the special relationship I have with this club and it has always felt like home to me.

My desire to win is still the same and I look forward to the opportunity to help this team. I am excited for this next chapter of my career.

Jose Mourinho also commented on the transaction:
He’s coming because he’s one of the best strikers in Europe. I know his personality very well and I know if he comes back he’s not protected by history or what he’s done for this club previously. He is coming with the mentality to make more history.

Drogba joined Galatasaray in January 2013 after a short stint with Shanghai Shenhua. Although he only spent a season-and-a-half with the Turkish club, he certainly left his mark. He scored 16 goals in 49 matches across all competitions.

The side also qualified for Champions League play this past season. The 36-year-old striker showed he could still play at that elite level, with two goals and three assists in eight matches in last year's tournament. It was an impressive display for someone whose form was supposed to drop off years ago.

APC condemns Kaduna bombings, says FG’s theory on Boko Haram up in flames

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed its shock and revulsion at Wednesday’s bomb attacks in Kaduna that targeted one of its leaders, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, as well as prominent cleric Dahiru Bauchi and left hordes of innocent civilians dead or injured.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party sent its condolences to the families of the victims and pray that God will give them the much-needed strength at times like this, while also wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

It said the attempted assassination of Gen. Buhari has changed the narrative about the insurgent group and knocked the bottom off the sinister, irresponsible and partisan colouration given to the insurgency by the Federal Government.

APC said while no one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, the mere fact that it occurred at all is a lose-lose situation for the Jonathan Administration.

”Whether it is Boko Haram or not, one thing remains: This government has failed woefully in its core constitutional duty of protecting the security and welfare of the citizenry. And we mean all the citizens, not just the leaders!

”And contrary to the simplistic and clearly selfish portrayal of the Boko Haram insurgency as a sinister plot to bring down the government of Jonathan, it should now be clear to the FG that has engaged in ceaseless finger-pointing instead of tackling the insurgency headlong that Boko Haram is an enemy of Nigeria and of all of humanity.

”It is a real problem that is capable of consuming this country if immediate and urgent steps are not made now by the FG to move away from its politicization of the crisis, its decision to use it as a trump card for President Jonathan’s re-election and exploit it as a ticket to international relevance for the President. If anything untoward had happened to Gen. Buhari on Wednesday, the consequences are only better imagined than witnessed!
”If indeed the APC is behind Boko Haram and Gen. Buhari is a sympathizer of the evil group, as the FG wants the world to believe, could it be that the insurgents do not know their leaders or sympathizers, assuming they are behind the attack? If they are not responsible for the attack, doesn’t that support the theory in some circles that Boko Haram has become a franchise, hence there is the Boko Haram of Abubakar Shekau and the political Boko Haram?

”Whatever happens now, the satanic and repulsive theory of the PDP-led FG that the opposition APC is using Boko Haram to truncate the Administration of Jonathan is up in flames. Therefore, it is time for them to change the narrative, see Boko Haram for what it is – an enemy of Nigeria – and rally the citizenry, irrespective of their political, ethnic or religious affiliation, behind the government’s efforts to tackle it decisively,” the party said.

It said that as a first step, President Jonathan must immediately stop the wasteful contract he signed with the US-based firm Levick to help demonize the APC as the sponsor of Boko Haram, and to demonize any Nigerian who is perceived to be an enemy of the government. It is this kind of demonization, using pseudo and out-of-job analysts, that helped to set the stage for Wednesday’s failed assassination attempt against Gen. Buhari.

”Then the President must address Nigerians to tell them that Boko Haram is not just an enemy of his government, it is an enemy of the opposition, of Christians, of Muslims and of the different ethnic groups.

”Instead of dividing Nigerians along religious, ethnic and political lines, President Jonathan should borrow a leaf from his predecessors. Obasanjo never said the Niger Delta militancy was aimed at his government or his people, he tackled it headlong. Yar’Adua it was who finally ended the militancy, without saying it was aimed at his government or his people,” APC said.

The party reiterated its earlier stand that only a non-partisan approach will galvanize Nigerians against Boko Haram, which is rooted more in the years of bad governance that have resulted in mass unemployment, massive corruption, economic imbalances and made the youth to become hopeless, thus creating an army of willing tools for criminal activities

It repeated its offer to work with the FG to battle Boko Haram and its call for a national stakeholders’ conference to help fashion out a comprehensive counter-insurgent blueprint for the nation.

APC said rather than just throwing money at what has now become a bottomless pit, rather than creating the avenue for some unpatriotic citizens to feed fat on the insurgency, the FG should engage in new thinking.

”After almost five years and 14 billion US dollars, Boko Haram is stronger today than ever. Whereas the average death toll in the previous years has been 1,500, more than 3,500 people have been killed so far this year! There is no stronger evidence that what is needed to successfully fight Boko Haram is not just 1 billion dollars, but a comprehensive approach that includes efforts to tackle the social and economic roots of the insurgency,” the party said.

Body odour reveals malarial infection

Scientists have found   that an infection with malaria pathogens changes the scent of infected mice, making those infected more attractive to mosquitoes. These are the findings of a team of researchers from ETH Zurich and Pennsylvania State University in a new study.

Malaria remains a formidable disease that is transmitted to humans by the anopheles mosquito. The pathogen is a protozoan of the genus Plasmodium. If left untreated, malaria can be deadly. However, the plasmodium parasite has a problem. To complete its lifecycle, it must eventually be acquired by another mosquito, which occurs when the insect bites an infected person.   Pathogen elicits the strongest odour during reproduction phase

In a new study published in PNAS, researchers showed that whether mosquitoes find the right victim to bite is not left to chance by the pathogen. Instead, the plasmodium parasite appears to manipulate its host by changing the characteristics of the infected individual’s body odour, which makes the carrier more attractive to hungry mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes were most attracted to infected mice with a high concentration of gametocytes, the plasmodium parasite’s reproductive cells, in their blood. When the mosquito consumes these cells along with the blood, a new development cycle starts in the mosquito’s gut.

No unique cocktail of scent components
However, the pathogens do not appear to trigger the expression of unique scent components. The researchers were unable to find any components that existed only in infected persons. Instead the malaria pathogens alter the levels of compounds already present in the scent of uninfected individuals.

The researchers believe it is logical that infected people smell more attractive but do not form highly specific body odours, especially given that the malaria pathogen can also have adverse effects on mosquitoes. “Since mosquitoes probably don’t benefit from feeding on infected people, it may make sense for the pathogen to exaggerate existing odour cues that the insects are already using for host location,” says study leader Mark Mescher.

What the researchers found most surprising is the fact that the malaria infection leaves its mark on body odour for life. Even when infected mice no longer had symptoms, their body odour showed that they were carriers of the pathogen.

However, not all stages of the disease smelled the same: the scent profile of the acutely ill differs from the profile found in individuals exhibiting later stages of malaria infection.

Boko Haram invades Borno village, kills 60

Maiduguri attack

MAIDUGURI— No fewer than 60 people from Gaidamgari village, in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State were killed weekend, while many others sustained gunshot wounds when some gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram Islamist sect attacked the community.

Apart from those who were either killed or maimed in the attack on Gaidamgari, sources said that many houses, shops and vehicles were also set ablaze just as most of the villagers were now taking refuge in Bama town.

Security sources, which confirmed the story, said the attack took place at about 10p.m. on Saturday, pointing out that “only 29 people were killed with few residents sustaining injuries.”

This was even as the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, yesterday said that over 15, 000 Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, were taking refuge in Biu and Goniri areas of the state.

Boko Haram recruiting
However, members of the sect, who attacked Damboa on Friday for the second time in two weeks, were reportedly looking for youths to recruit. It was gathered that a large number of troops were yesterday deployed to the surrounding villages and towns to confront the terrorists.

At Gaidamgari, a source said: “On refusal of the community to allow their children, particularly young boys of between the ages of 15 to 20 to be recruited into the Boko Haram group, the terrorists mobilised and launched attacks on the village, killing over 60 people.”

According to the sources, the attackers invaded the village in Toyota Hilux vehicles with Improvised Ex-plosive Devices and wrecked havoc on defencless civilians.

In another development, about five motorists, including passengers, were at the weekend ambushed along Bama  Maiduguri road by some terrorists.

A source at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital told Vanguard that “five dead bodies were brought into the hospital weekend, and preliminary investigations revealed that they were victims of Boko Haram road ambush along Maiduguri Bama road.”

Why we shut markets, hotel in FCT— Army

The Nigerian Army has said some hotels and markets in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, were shut down because they failed to put in place counter-Improvised, Explosive Devices, IEDs, measures.

It would be recalled that in the aftermath of the Banex Plaza bombing, which claimed scores of lives and damaged property, security agencies in the FCT directed business concerns, plazas, markets and shopping centres to put in place measures to counter such attacks.

Reacting to the development, Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier-General Olajide Laleye, said: “The Nigerian Army conducted a vulnerability survey of the Federal Capital Territory and asked certain high risk spots to emplace a series of counter-IED measures.

“They refused and, as such, they have been shut until they comply. You will notice that Banex and Emab Plazas have complied and are opened.

“Hotels, markets, recreation centres and worship places are included.”
Vanguard recalls that some of the shopping plazas and places of business have been shut since last Friday.
