It’s no secret that a man’s sexual function declines with age. As his testosterone level falls, it takes more to arouse him. Once aroused, he takes longer to get an erection and to achieve orgasm and, following orgasm, to become aroused again. Age brings marked declines in semen volume and sperm quality. Erectile dysfunction (ED), or impotence, is clearly linked to advancing years; studies show that between the ages of 40 and 70, the percentage of potent men falls from 60% to roughly 30%.

Men also experience a gradual decline in urinary function. A man’s urine stream weakens over time as a consequence of weakened bladder muscles and, in many cases, prostate enlargement.

And that’s not all. Recent research confirms what men have long suspected and, in some cases, feared. The penis itself undergoes significant changes as a man moves from his sexual prime — around age 30 for most guys — into middle age and on to older age. Changes include:

Appearance

There are two major changes. The head of the penis (glans) gradually loses its purplish color, the result of reduced blood flow. And there is a slow loss of pubic hair. “As testosterone wanes, the penis gradually reverts to its prepubertal, mostly hairless, state,” says Irwin Goldstein, MD, director of sexual medicine at Alvarado Hospital in San Diego and editor-in-chief of The Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Penis Size

Weight gain is common as men grow older. As fat accumulates on the lower abdomen, the apparent size of the penis changes. Ira Sharlip, MD, clinical professor of urology at the University of California, San Francisco, says, “A large pre pubic fat pad makes the penile shaft look shorter.” “In some cases, abdominal fat all but buries the penis,” says Ronald Tamler, MD, PhD, co-director of the Men’s Health Program at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. “One way I motivate my overweight patients is by telling them that they can appear to gain up to an inch in size simply by losing weight.”

In addition to this apparent shrinkage (which is reversible) the penis tends to undergo an actual (and irreversible) reduction in size. The reduction — in both length and thickness — typically isn’t dramatic but may be noticeable. “If a man’s erect penis is 6 inches long when he is in his 30s, it might be 5 or 5-and-a-half inches when he reaches his 60s or 70s,” Goldstein says.

What causes the penis to shrink? At least two mechanisms are involved. One is the slow deposit of fatty substances (plaques) inside tiny arteries in the penis, which impairs blood flow to the organ. This process, known as atherosclerosis, is the same one that contributes to blockages in the coronary arteries — a leading cause of heart attack.

Goldstein explains that another mechanism involves the gradual buildup of relatively inelastic collagen (scar tissue) within the stretchy fibrous sheath that surrounds the erection chambers. Erections occur when these chambers fill with blood. Blockages in the penile arteries — and increasingly inelastic chambers — mean smaller erections.

As penis size changes, so does the size of the testicles. “Starting around age 40, the testicles definitely begin to shrink,” Goldstein says. The testicles of a 30-year-old man might measure 3 centimeters in diameter, he says; those of a 60-year-old, perhaps measures only 2 centimeters.

Curvature

 If penile scar tissue accumulates unevenly, the penis can become curved. This condition, known as Peyronie’s disease, occurs most commonly in middle age. It can cause painful erections and make intercourse difficult. The condition may require surgery.

Sensitivity

 Numerous studies have shown that the penis becomes less sensitive over time. This can make it hard to achieve an erection and to have an orgasm. Whether it renders orgasm less pleasurable is still an open question.

Experts say these changes need not ruin your erotic life. One recent study showed significant declines in erectile function, libido, and ejaculatory function in the men studied but only moderate decreases in sexual satisfaction. The study’s authors concluded that, “Older men may be less likely to perceive these declines as a problem and be dissatisfied.”

As Goldstein puts it, “The most important ingredient for a satisfying sex life is the ability to satisfy your partner. And that doesn’t require peak sexual performance or a big penis.”

AU endorses 7,500 regional Force to fight Boko Haram

The African Union (AU) has endorsed a plan for a regional task force of 7,500 Army to fight the Islamist Boko Haram militants in Nigeria.

The leaders meeting during the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) agreed to the plan after its session on Thursday to bring to an end to the killings and maiming of residents of the North East part of Nigeria by the militant group.

The meeting presided by President Alpha Conde of Guinea, said the effort would end the militants, who recently expanded their attacks to the borders of Lake Chad region of Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, Chad and Benin had earlier in the month requested the AU to seek U.N. Security Council mandate for their plan to take on insurgents who are allegedly fighting to create an Islamic state in northern Nigeria.

Mr Smail Chergui, the AU commissioner for Peace and Security Council, told reporters on the sidelines of an African summit in Addis Ababa shortly after the meeting that: “We are thinking of a force of 7,500 women and men which will be submitted to the U.N. Security Council for approval.’’

Chergui hoped that the concept of the force would be better organised and “we can achieve the goal that we are looking for to really stop the killing and these barbaric acts of Boko Haram’’.

He said the African group would meet in Cameroon early February “to draw up a concept of operations and strategy, rules of engagement, command and control, and related issues’’.

Each of the five nations would contribute a battalion with each contingent to base within its national borders, with operations to be coordinated from Chad.

Meanwhile, the endorsement is expected to be ratified at the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government scheduled for Friday morning at the Union headquarters in Addis Ababa.

Boko Haram planning to use livestock as bombers – FG

The Federal Government, yesterday, revealed the purported plans by Boko Haram to use male suicide bombers disguised as cobblers (shoe repairers) as well as livestock, like goats, cows, donkeys and camels, to carry out their deadly missions.

According to the Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, “available intelligence reports indicate a plan by Boko Haram to use young male suicide bombers disguised as cobblers to hide explosives in their tool boxes and detonate them on soft target areas such as markets, restaurants, ATM locations, political rallies, worship centres as well as other public places.

“Also, there is indication of a plan by this group to use livestock such as, goats, cows, donkeys and camels laden with explosives to attack chosen targets.

“The general public, including all persons operating within and around the aforementioned places, are advised to be vigilant and mindful of suspicious activities in their environment.”

Omeri stressed that the security agencies might arrest persons, who take their livestock to city centres for grazing, as it had posed a security threat to the people.

Maiduguri residents told to stay and fight, as curfew lifted

A curfew imposed in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri after a weekend Boko Haram attack was lifted on Monday, as the state governor urged residents to stay and fight.

The restive city has been on lock-down since Sunday morning, when the Islamist militants launched a dawn raid that was later repelled by the military.

Nigerian Army spokesman Colonel Sani Usman said: “The curfew imposed on Maiduguri has been lifted as from 6:00 am (0500 GMT). People can go about their legitimate business.”

The military high command in Abuja has said “scores” of Boko Haram fighters were killed as soldiers using heavy weaponry with air support halted the rebel advance.

The attack came a day after President Goodluck Jonathan visited the city as part of his re-election campaign and again vowed to end the six-year insurgency.

Fears have been growing for months about a large-scale attack, as the militants captured swathes of territory in Borno State, of which Maiduguri is the capital.

State governor Kashim Shettima told BBC radio’s Hausa-language service on Monday that the curfew was imposed “to enable security personnel to carry out their operations”.

But with the city gripped by the possibility that the rebels will try to attack again — and news that Boko Haram had captured the nearby town of Monguno — he called for calm.

“I call on the people of Borno State not to panic,” he said. “This is our land. No fear, no flight, no retreat. We should not flee.

“We have a history dating back 1,000 years and I swear by Allah we are going to subdue them (Boko Haram).”

Two security sources told AFP on Sunday that Monguno, which is about 125 kilometres (80 miles) north of Maiduguri, had fallen into rebel hands.

Boko Haram overran the town and captured a military barracks, from which it is feared that it will launch a fresh strike on Maiduguri, where the group was founded in 2002.

Shettima added: “It is bad in Monguno. I’ll not lie to you. People are trooping to Maiduguri. They are being held by the military outside the city.

“There is need for screening before they are allowed in” to determine whether any of the people are militants, he added.

Nigeria pleased with agreement on multinational task force ino fighting Boko Haram —- Jonathans

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday in Lagos said Nigeria was pleased with the international community’s agreement with it on the multinational task force initiative in fighting the Boko Haram insurgency.

This is contained in a statement in Abuja by Reuben Abati, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity.

“We are pleased that the international community is now strongly united behind this initiative and agree that its success is critical.

“It is equally important that the multinational force receives the significant support that is required to address the threat through our global partners,’’ he said.

Jonathan spoke against the backdrop of his meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, in Lagos on Sunday.

He said they had a candid and constructive discussion about a broad range of issues.

“Nigeria is a vibrant democracy and the largest trading partner of the U.S. in Africa, with more than 18 billion dollars in bilateral trade.

“Our countries and peoples share a mutual admiration for each other and a deep commitment to freedom, democracy, and human rights.

“This is why we are together engaged in a struggle against a common enemy that promotes terror, fear, division, and violates human rights, most especially of women and girls, with complete impunity.

“Winning the fight against Boko Haram in Nigeria and West Africa is absolutely essential to beat back the tide of religious extremism around the world.

“Our security forces have been working tirelessly and courageously to achieve this goal.

“I reaffirmed to Kerry that Nigeria is strongly committed to building the Niger and Benin Republic under the auspices of the Lake Chad Basin Commission.

“Indeed, I called publicly for such a regional approach at the African Leaders’ Summit in Paris in May 2014 and more recently at multilateral meetings,’’ President Jonathan said.

He also acknowledged that the U.S., more than any other country in the world, has the most experience fighting armed insurgencies.

“Having suffered the devastating attacks of 9/11, its people also understand the insecurity and fear that are the realities for the vast majority of peaceful, tolerant Muslims and Christians in North Eastern Nigeria.

“This is why I firmly believe that enhancing and expanding various channels of co-operation between our two countries, in the context of growing international co-ordination, are of the utmost importance.

“I discussed a number of ideas with Kerry to move such co-operation forward,’’ Jonathan said.

He expressed gratitude to the U.S. for standing with Nigeria and its people in its fight against Boko Haram.

“I reaffirmed our strong commitment to working together with the U.S. to put an end to global terrorism and particularly Boko Haram.

“Nigeria will also work to deepen and consolidate our bilateral relationship with the U.S.,’’ the President said.

Jonathan said he also assured Kerry of his deep commitment to ensuring that Nigeria’s forthcoming elections were free, fair, and credible.

He however said it was especially critical that all political parties abide by the Abuja Accord, which commits each to non-violence before, during, and after the election.

“I made it absolutely clear that the May 29th handover date is sacrosanct.

“In addition, the Government will provide all resources that are required by INEC to ensure that the election goes smoothly.

“I also emphasised that INEC is an independent body, which makes its own decisions without any interference from the Government.

Aftermath of Shekau’s latest video: Military set for total war against Boko Haram

Angered by the latest video of Boko Haram, the military yesterday drew final battle line with the sect by unveiling a “once-and-for-all comprehensive operation” in the North-East.

The full-scale ‘war’ will be heightened in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states in the next few days.

Those who live in the affected areas in the North-East have been asked to relocate.

Already, troops have been given the marching order to eliminate safe havens and escape routes of Boko Haram in the country before the February elections.

The massive attack against the insurgents will be backed by troops from Cameroon, Niger and Chad.

Also, the Presidency has endorsed the military plan which might lead to a total declaration of war against the insurgents in the North-East.

According to findings, the military was disturbed by the alleged claim of the sect that it has enough weapons to take on Nigeria.

It was learnt that the military offered to confront the insurgents headlong to “settle the insurgency problem” once and for all.

A top military source said: “It is now fight-to-the-finish between the troops and the insurgents. There will be a total blockade of all the routes being used by the insurgents.

“Neighbouring countries like Cameroon, Niger and Chad have bought into the latest offensive plan, having realised the danger in continuing to allow terrorists free movement across the borders.

“Nigerian military is reviewing strategy in the combat against terrorists to accommodate joint and combined operations with neighbouring military organisations.”

The source gave an insight into the new Action Plan against Boko Haram, saying: “Massive deployment of air and amphibious assets are expected to feature in the operation. Preparatory to this mission, the Defence Headquarters has changed the General Officer Commanding the 7 Division which is the leading formation in the counter-terrorism campaign.

“The deployment for the mission is expected to facilitate the elimination of safe havens and escape routes of terrorists in or out of Nigeria.

“The arrangement has enlisted the support of the military forces of neighbouring countries towards ensuring that the plan to effectively block the terrorists for elimination while they are being pounded in the ongoing counter terrorism campaign is effectively attained. “

Responding to a question, the source said: “The operation is expected to terminate well before the February 14 elections so that Nigerians living in every part of the country can vote in their towns and villages.

“However, it is expected that innocent citizens living in the areas where the terrorists presently operate are temporarily moved to safe towns away from the theatre of operations.

The Director of Defence Information, Major-General Chris Olukolade, however declined to give details.

He simply added: “The military would not relent in its efforts to restore peace to every part of the country as quickly as possible. But details of such efforts would not be disclosed now.”

He however admitted that “all the countries bordering Nigeria are willing to complement the efforts in Nigeria as terrorism has remained a menace or threat to all in the region.”

The leader of the insurgents, Abubakar Shekau, had in a 36-minute video in the week boasted of more deadly attacks by the sect in the next few weeks.

He said: “Insha Allahu, we are going to do His work with these arms at our disposal. We are going to sacrifice our lives in doing God’s work.

“As you can see, we have thousands of AK 47 rifles, we have so much that we are still conveying them to our camp here. We have AA; we have different kinds of them that can be mounted on vehicles. We Shell Car; we have RPGs; We have mag and so on.

“We cannot just mention them. We have dozens of vehicles and tanks that God has given us.”
